MOREHEAD, Ky. – Drew Lee hit 3-for-5 with three RBIs, while #J.D. Ashbrook
and Michael Fear# each hit home runs to lead Morehead State to an 11-5 victory over Transylvania Wednesday night.
Josh Schneider pitched four innings of one-run relief to pick up his second win of the season, while
Trey Smith started and gave up no earned runs in four innings.
MSU (6-9) grabbed a run in the first when Ashbrook singled and eventually scored when Transylvania’s Adam Clark airmailed his throw to first on a
Taylor Davis ground ball.
The Pioneers took the lead in the top of the second. Smith got the first two batters of the inning in order before a walk, an error, a balk and a wild pitch allowed Drew Zuckerman to score. Pete Travisano singled to plate another run before
Daniel Pugh made a diving grab on a sinking line drive from Thomas Tolliver in left field to end the inning.
Smith went on to pitch four innings, allowing just two hits and two unearned runs in his best start of the season.
MSU took the lead with a three-run fifth. Ashbrook beat out an infield single and Redmon scored when shortstop Clark’s throw was in the dirt and rolled to the fence. Pugh then tripled to the gap in left center to drive in Ashbrook. Lee then drove in Pugh to cap the inning.
Schneider, a redshirt sophomore, had his best outing of the season. He allowed just four hits, struck out three, and had good command of his pitches. The Pioneers' (4-2) only run off Schneider came on a weakly hit blooper down the right field line that just eluded first baseman
Michael Bottoms.
“Schneider threw the ball really well today,” said coach Jay Sorg. “It’s a good sign to see him getting healthy again.”
Ashbrook extended the Eagle lead in the bottom of the seventh with his sixth home run of the season. The blast drove in
Andrew Deeds, who had drawn a lead-off walk. Davis drove in another run with a single to centerfield that plated Lee who reached on a single and advanced to to second on a passed ball.
“J.D.’s really been carrying us all year and he really picked us up with the two-run home run that tipped the scales in our favor,” said Sorg.
Fear started a four-run eighth with a two-run jack to right field that drove in
Cameron Flynn who had walked to lead off the inning. Lee then drove in his 23rd and 24th RBIs of the season with a one-out single that scored Redmon and Pugh.
Seven of the nine Eagle batters scored in the game. Ashbrook scored three times, with two singles to go with his seventh inning home run. Pugh and Redmon each scored twice and also had multi-hit efforts.
Jake Helvey came in to finish the game giving up a home run to Phil Blakely, but safely closing out the game.
Game Notes: Drew Lee now has a 12-game hitting streak. The slugger had three separate 10-game hitting streaks last season. Michael Fear, five games, and Cameron Flynn, four games, are each working on hitting streaks as well. Michael Bottoms seven-game hitting streak was snapped.
