Downing was an outstanding football coach who built the team from the ground up. He led them to a 7-2 record in 1928. At the time of his induction he had the fourth best winning percentage in MSU history in football. As a basketball coach he led the Eagles to a 51-45 record, including a 9-3 mark during the 1929-30 season. MSU’s baseball team, under Downing’s guidance, totaled 25 with just nine loses.

Downing’s overall coaching record for all three sports while at MSU combined for a 104-87-3 mark.
