A native of Paintsville, Ky., Kirtley earned a spot on the 1950 All-Ohio Valley Conference First-Team. He set numerous receiving records while at MSU, including most yards gained in a game (228), most touchdowns passes caught in a game (3), and most touchdown passes caught in a career (15). Kirtley was the favorite target of fellow Hall of Fame member Charles (Izzy) Porter.
