Howard Murphy played football for Morehead State from 1960-63. He lettered all four years for the Eagles. Murphy was the first African-American athlete to play football at MSU.
Murphy rushed for 1,447 yards with 13 touchdowns in his career at MSU. His 6.3 yards per carry average led the Ohio Valley Conference in 1960. He was an All-OVC Second-Team selection as a junior.
As a senior, Murphy averaged 4.7 yards per carry and was named First-Team All-OVC. In addition to his rushing yardage, he caught 36 passes and scored 120 points during his career at MSU. As a member of the track team, he set the OVC record with a 9.7 clocking in the 100-meter dash.
After his playing days, Murphy went on to become a teacher and a successful coach for the Springfield City School in Springfield, Ohio.
