A native of Salisbury, Zimbabwe, Birch ranked number two in her country of Zimbabwe when she decided to come to MSU to continue her playing career. As a freshman she posted an impressive 17-5 record in singles matches and only lost one match in doubles. She helped lead her Eagles to two OVC Championships, the first being as a sophomore in 1983 and second coming her senior year of 1985. She also was selected to the All-OVC doubles team in 1985. In the classroom, Birch had a perfect 4.0 GPA.
