During Cooper’s three years of playing basketball at MSU he led the state of Kentucky in scoring, averaging 21.5 points. He finished as the second leading scorer in MSU history. He also led MSU to the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in 1943.

Cooper, who was inducted into the Rowan County Senior High School Hall of Fame, also served as the head boys’ basketball coach at RCSHS. He also was an assistant principal at the high school for four years and coached the Viking track and baseball teams. He is the only person to have played, coached and refereed at the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state basketball tournament. The gymnasium at RCSHS is named in honor of Cooper.

Cooper passed away on December 13, 2010 at the age of 90.
