MOREHEAD, Ky. – A
Bethany Davidson goal with just 33 seconds left in the first overtime propelled the Morehead State soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Miami University (Ohio) Friday night at Jayne Stadium. It was Davidson’s second goal of the season and the Eagles' first-ever victory in the series against the RedHawks.
MSU goalkeeper
Lily Meisner was superb in goal for the Eagles, turning away everything sent her way en route to her second consecutive shutout.
Miami kept consistent pressure on the MSU defensive corps and Meisner was forced into action early, making a diving one-handed save on a header from Miami’s Allison Berkey in the tenth minute. Morehead State also had its chances, but could not solve Miami goalkeeper Krista Pace, who made three saves in the first stanza. Meisner totaled five saves in the period as the Eagles were outshot 6-4 in the half.
The second half saw much of the same as neither squad could find the back of the net. The RedHawks came close to gaining the lead late in the half, when Jodi Zwingelberg tried to beat Meisner near post. Meisner made the initial stop on the well driven shot and then pounced on the rebound as it spun near the goal line.
Meisner made two more saves in the period, while Pace made one stop. The Eagles were again outshot, this time by a 6-5 margin.
The contest looked destined for a second overtime as neither team could mount any real threats through the first nine minutes of the first extra session. A Miami foul gave the Eagles a free kick with 33 seconds remaining just twenty yards from the RedHawk net. Erin Adams bent the free kick around the Miami wall and directly at Pace who made the save but could not handle it cleanly, leaving a juicy rebound that the charging Davidson put into the back of the net to give the Eagles the victory.
Meisner ended the game with eight saves, while Pace totaled five stops. Miami held the advantage in shots, 16-13 and shots on goal, 8-6.
MSU head coach
Warren Lipka was happy with his team’s toughness after playing a heavy schedule in the past week.
“It was our fourth game in seven days after a playing a double overtime game, but they fought through the adversity and came out with a win,” said Lipka.
With the win, MSU improves its record to 3-4-1, while Miami drops to 2-2.
