MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State rifle fell to Jacksonville State 4634-4554 Saturday afternoon in the Button Rifle range.
“With JSU being a top-six school, I knew they would put up a great score,” Morehead State Rifle coach
Walt Rybka stated. “We didn’t shoot to our potential, and although our smallbore score improved, our air rifle score declined.”
It was freshman
Ethan Cole that stood out with scores of 573 both in smallbore competition and air rifle. Cole shot the team best for smallbore, while sophomore Mary Saenger led the Eagles in air rifle with a 574, despite fighting flu-like symptoms.
Freshmen
Jumell Wilson and
Christian Hashagen also got in on the action with scores good enough to contribute to the Eagles' overall scores. Wilson shot a 558 in smallbore and a 564 mark in air rifle. Hashagen contributed to the Eagles overall total in air rifle with an impressive 563.
“Nearly everyone on the team improved on at least one gun, some on both,” coach Rybka said. “I am encouraged and look forward to doing better next week at Ohio State University if everyone can get and stay healthy.”
Other notables for the day include junior
Rob Gagliani’s 572, Saegner’s 567 and senior Justin Egan’s 563 marks, rounding out the Eagles’ smallbore effort. In air rifle, junior
Hannah Wagner built off her momentum from two weeks ago with a 569, good enough to add to the Eagles’ combined score and third-best on the team.
The Eagle rifle team will head to Columbus, Ohio next week to take on OSU for their first road match of the season. The match is scheduled for Oct. 9 with the first round scheduled to start at 9 a.m. ET.
