MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State rifle beat Virginia Military Institute 4,570-4,352 in a match held at Button Rifle Range on Saturday.
The aggregate score shot by the Eagles was their highest mark so far this season, beating their previous high score by eight points. The Eagles shot 2,264 in air rifle and 2,306 in smallbore, a team best in smallbore this season.
Freshman Ethan Cole fired a solid 588 in smallbore, besting his previous personal high by nine points. Cole ended up with a team-best and season-high 1,161 total on the day.
Keeping her average just above 578 in air rifle was sophomore Mary Saenger. Saenger shot a 585 in the air rifle portion and finished the match with a 1,146 aggregate mark.
"Overall it was a good match, our highest total of the year," said coach Walt Rybka. "There were some new highs in air by Christian Hashagen and Ethan Cole and a solid air score from Mary Saenger."
The Eagles will take on the University of Akron shooters this week before heading into winter break. Their head-to-head record now stands at 5-4.
