BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Morehead State University has been awarded the 2010-11 Ohio Valley Conference Institutional Academic Achievement Award, the league announced Tuesday. MSU also won two Team Academic Achievement Awards and had more than 100 student-athletes recognized for individual awards.
It marks the 11th time Morehead State has won the honor in the 25 years it has been awarded, an OVC record. The Eagles claimed the award for the second year in a row and sixth time in the last seven years. The award is presented annually to the member institution with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes earning a 3.25 grade point average or higher for that academic year.
“Our continued academic success is a testament to the dedication our student-athletes have to their education," said MSU Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson. They are as devoted to their studies as they are to their success on the playing field and this is a direct reflection of the dedication of our coaches and academic coordinator Valerie Ousley. I am absolutely thrilled that we have won the OVC Academic Banner for an 11th time and expect that our classroom behavior will put us in a position to continue this tradition.”
The league also announced the recipients of 16 OVC Team Academic Achievement Awards, which are presented annually in each Conference-sponsored sport to the member institution's team with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher.
Morehead State women's soccer earned the team academic acheivement award outright while Eagle volleyball shared the award with Jacksonville State.
MSU had 15 student-athletes win the OVC Medal of Honor, given annually to the student-athlete who achieves the highest grade point average in a Conference-sponsored sport.
In addition, 91 Eagle student-athletes were named to the OVC Commissioners' Honor Roll.
To be listed, recipients must have achieved at least a 3.25 grade point average and have been eligible and on the team throughout the competitive season in their chosen NCAA-sponsored sport.
