MOREHEAD, Ky. – The No. 19 Morehead State rifle team split a pair of matches this past weekend at Button Rifle Range.
On Saturday, the Eagles defeated Rose-Hulman (Ind.), 4,530-4,352, before falling to Ohio Valley Conference foe No. 18 Columbus State, 4,577-4,542, on Sunday.
In MSU’s bout with RHIT, the Eagles posted four of the five top smallbore scores. Sophomore Ethan Cole led the pack with a 571, while junior Mary Saenger (560), sophomore Christian Hashagen (558) and freshman Emma Uchida (552) rounded out the top five.
Junior Evan Duval earned RHIT’s only top-five finish with a 565.
In air rifle, senior Hannah Wagner led all shooters with a 576 in the event and MSU turned in the remainder of the top-five finishes with Uchida (574), Cole (573), freshman Jumell Wilson (573) and Saenger (572) falling in line. Wagner, Uchida and Wilson all shot season-bests in the event.
CSU claimed three of the top-five spots in smallbore to contribute to its defeat of the Eagles, however, it was Cole who led all shooters in the category with a 574. Saenger was also a top contributor for the Eagles in the event with a 564.
In air rifle, Saenger and Uchida teamed up for the only top-five Eagle finishes with Saenger (580) grabbing second overall and Uchida (578) placing third. Freshman JS Fielding led all air rifle shooters with a 582.
MSU is back in action when it hosts CSU, Jacksonville State, Murray State and UT Martin for the OVC Championship Feb. 2-3 at Button Rifle Range.
