MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State has finalized its 2013-14 women's basketball schedule. The 29-game ledger features 14 home dates and six opponents who advanced to the postseason last year.
Game times will be announced via MSUEagles.com in the near future.
"We are very excited about our schedule and the challenges it will bring," Head Coach Tom Hodges said. "We have several tremendous regular season home games which should be very attractive to our wonderful fan base."
The non-conference home schedule includes Colonial Athletic Conference foe George Mason (Nov. 12), Mid-American Conference member Ohio (Nov. 16), Atlantic 10 front-runner Duquesne (Nov. 24) and Big Ten Conference opponent Indiana (Dec. 8). The regular season opener features Norfolk State (Nov. 8). MSU closes the first semester hosting Berea (Ky.) (Dec. 18).
"The opportunity to host perennial powers such as Duquesne, who has been ranked among the nation's top-25 programs the last couple of years, and Indiana is a tremendous testament to our program's profile," Hodges said. "Our non-conference schedule provides nice balance that we feel will prepare us for a great Ohio Valley Conference schedule."
The Eagles have several regional non-conference road match-ups. MSU will travel to Lipscomb (Nov. 10), Marshall (Nov. 18), East Tennessee State (Nov. 21), Cleveland State (Nov. 27), Western Kentucky (Dec. 1), Cincinnati (Dec. 4) and Southern Illinois (Dec. 30).
"The fact that we are able to carry on regional rivalries with the majority of our non-conference schedule is exciting and should provide a greater amount of intensity early in the season," Hodges added.
Duquesne and Western Kentucky advanced to the postseason a year ago, while OVC foes Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and UT Martin also made postseason appearances.
The OVC schedule features 16 games. Morehead State opens league play with road tilts at Eastern Illinois (Jan. 4) and SIU Edwardsville (Jan. 6). The first league contest at home is versus rival Eastern Kentucky (Jan. 11).
The league features two divisions. MSU, which is in the East Division along with Belmont, Jacksonville State, Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech, faces those teams twice.
The Eagles play the opposite division teams once. Among the six West Division teams, MSU will host Austin Peay (Jan. 13), UT Martin (Jan. 18) and Southeast Missouri (Jan. 20).
"The OVC schedule this year also provides great balance and a chance for our fans to be extremely invested in our journey to Nashville for the conference tournament," Hodges said.
Morehead State opens the season with a Nov. 1 exhibition game against Kentucky Christian.
"We want and need our great fans to get behind our team as we look to attack this schedule with unmatched enthusiasm and tenacity," Hodges concluded.
