MSU Student-Athletes Record 3.08 GPA for Spring Semester

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State's student-athletes recorded a 3.08 cumulative grade point average during the spring semester, while 12 athletic programs posted better than a 3.00 GPA and 32 individuals registered a 4.00 GPA.  The figures encompass 262 student-athletes who participated in NCAA-sponsored sports this past semester.

"Congratulations to all of these teams and individuals on a great semester in the classroom," Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services & Senior Woman Administrator Sara Larson said.  "We certainly want our teams to be competitive in their respective sports, but we also want our student-athletes to earn their college degrees."

Morehead State was identified by the NCAA in 2012 as one of six institutions to be part of a three-year pilot program aimed to increased student-athlete academic performance.  The Eagles are receiving $360,000 from the NCAA during a three-year span.  The university is also contributing $180,000, which pushes the total to $540,000.

"We are very grateful to the NCAA and our university leadership for their generosity and commitment to our student-athletes," Larson said.  "The results have been better this school year.  We have always been proud of what our student-athletes accomplish in the classroom, but knew this money could take our success to another level."

All Morehead State student-athletes have access to the EAGLE Center.  The facility features 7,000 square feet of space, dedicated to computer labs, learning labs and study space.  The center has wireless internet, seating for 110 student-athletes and 30 computers.  It also houses several offices for coaches and academic support staff.

"The EAGLE Center is a terrific facility," Larson added.  "We have four staff members who work with our student-athletes from an academic standpoint, and we have all the resources for them to be successful.  Academics have been a priority in the time I've been at Morehead State (since 2002), and I'm really happy our GPAs are reflecting that."
