LEXINGTON, Ky.— The Morehead State rifle team shot a combined score of 4,600 for only the second time in school history Saturday during a tri match versus Kentucky and Navy at Buell Armory.
Even though MSU fell short to UK, shooting a 4,657, and Navy recording a 4,616, according to Head Coach
Alan Joseph the 4,600 mark was a significant day for his team.
"This is the current benchmark for college rifle teams. Last year for the first time ever, the top 16 teams in the nation all averaged 4,600 or higher in their top three scores. The sport had never seen 16 teams that deep in talent. MSU is now on the doorstep. We aspire to join the 4,600 club. On Saturday, we submitted our application."
The marksman of the day was sophomore Seth "Cream of Wheat" Baker, shattering numerous career highs throughout the day. He shot 196 in kneeling, 576 in smallbore, 582 in air rifle, and 1,158 combined.
Baker wasn't the only Eagle accumulating career highs. Sophomore
Dan Hall scored 1,160 combined, while he shot 577 in smallbore and 583 in air rifle. Fellow sophomore
Joe Fischer tied his own school record set just a week ago with 197 in smallbore kneeling.
Freshman
Brandon Bryer Bryer shot career highs in kneeling smallbore with a 188, smallbore prone with 195, and a 564 in combined smallbore. Freshman Siarra "CC" Crum shot a new career high with a 584 in air rifle.
The 4,600 score was the second highest in school history, only being outdone back in February in the OVC Championship with a 4,607. The Eagles recorded a 2291 in smallbore, a season high, and 2309 in air rifle, the second highest score of the year.
MSU will now be on hiatus preparing for the Eagle Challenge, set for Jan. 22-24 at Button Range.
