MOREHEAD, Ky. -- For the second consecutive day, school records fell by the wayside for the nationally-ranked Morehead State rifle team as the Eagles narrowly fell to visiting Jacksonville State, 4643-4612, Sunday at Button Rifle Range.
The Eagles, who had set the school air rifle record on Saturday versus VMI, eclipsed that mark today with a score of 2334. Morehead State also tied the school aggregate total it had set a day prior with a grand total of 4612 against the Gamecocks.
A pair of freshmen led the Eagles' charge as
Sarah Fink led all 17 shooters with a smallbore score of 576. Newcomer
Karly Potts fired a team-best 587 in air rifle, which was second best in the match. Three others -- sophomore
Siarra Crum (585), freshman
Jesse Moyer (581) and junior
Haley Wilson (581) also topped the 580-mark in air rifle.
In smallbore, juniors
Seth Baker (573) and
Joe Fischer (572) finished among the top eight. Fischer recorded a perfect 100 on his second prone smallbore target, while Fink and sophomore
Brandon Bryer each nailed a 100 on their fourth air rifle targets.
JSU's Brandon Muske notched the best score of the day in air, tallying a 595. The Gamecocks were ranked 15th in the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association poll, while the Eagles are 20th this week.
MSU travels to Mississippi on Saturday.
