MOREHEAD, Ky. - Following wins over Kentucky Christian and Lipscomb to open the season, Morehead State looks to move to 3-0 when they travel to Marshall on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
The Eagles have not started the season off at 3-0 since 1993-94 when they beat Northern Kentucky, Loyola-Chicago, and Thomas More to open the year.
One key to their quick start on the season has been quick starts in each game. Morehead State jumped out to a 21-0 lead over KCU on Friday and then started 12-0 against Lipscomb on Sunday.Â
This will be the 98th meeting between Marshall and Morehead State. Marshall owns a 50-47 advantage in the series, but the Eagles have won the last three. Last season, the Eagles utilized a balanced attack to down the Thundering Herd, 85-61. The Eagles outrebounded the Herd, 45-27, and held a 50-20 advantage in points in the paint.
"It's always a good game when we play Marshall, it's a rivalry that goes back years," said head coach
Sean Woods. "We're looking forward to it, they're a much better team than they were last year. To get a win, we're going to have to continue to do what we do - defend, rebound, limit them to one shot, and make them guard on the other end."
Rebounding and points in the paint have been pivotal to Morehead State's 2-0 start this season, as well. Their rebounding margin is +20.5 after outrebounding KCU, 43-25, and Lipscomb, 46-23. They have 35 offensive rebounds in their first two games and are outscoring opponents in the paint, 98-30.
"Rebounding was a question mark coming into the season because of our size, but we continue to rebound at the same level we have been and I'm very proud of them for that," said Woods.
Leading the charge down low is senior forward
DeJuan Marrero, who recorded his seventh career double-double in the win over Lipscomb with 17 points and 16 rebounds.
Following the game with Marshall, the Eagles remain on the road for two more away from Johnson Arena. They travel to Evansville on Saturday, Nov. 19 and Pittsburgh on Friday, Nov. 25. Morehead State then returns home to face Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
