LEXINGTON, Ky. – After winning three straight games by a combined 89 points, Morehead State dropped its first road test of the season to No. 20 Kentucky, 74-47.
"It was our first game on the road, against an SEC team," said Eagles head coach
Greg Todd. "I thought we did some good things. We were able to win some stretches."
Morehead State (3-2) came out of the gate shooting 5-for-9 (.556) from three-point land, led by a pair of 2-for-2 shooters in
Aaliyah Wells and
Breuna Jackson. The Eagles ended the first quarter down just 20-17.
MSU struggled in the second period, but outscored Kentucky 17-16 in the third quarter. The Wildcats proved to be too much to handle in the fourth, however, ending the game on an 11-2 run.
"I thought our girls played tough," Todd said. "Our defense, considering we were on the road against Kentucky, was pretty good."
Brianna McQueen highlighted the Eagles' offensive attack, pouring in a team-high 14 points. Wells finished with 10 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward
Eriel McKee contributed five points, a season-high 12 boards, and four blocks.
"We won't give up," said McKee. "We'll play hard until the last minute. We're going to hustle every play, no matter what."
Morehead State will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 26 when Chicago State visits Johnson Arena at 12 p.m. ET. The Eagles dropped a closely contested 75-71 early-season matchup in Chicago last season.
"We lost a tough game up there last year," Todd said. "It will be a challenge. We look forward to that."
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
