CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State opened 2016-17 Ohio Valley Conference play with an 81-71 victory over Austin Peay on Thursday night at the Winfield Dunn Center. The Eagles move to 11-3 on the season, marking the program's best start since 2001-02.
"We were able to do a lot of good things," said head coach
Greg Todd. "Any time you go on the road and win, you've got to be happy."
A balanced scoring attack led the way for Morehead State, as five Eagles logged at least 10 points in the win. Redshirt-senior
Brianna McQueen poured in 15 with three steals, and senior
Shay Steele followed closely with a 14-point, two-block effort.
Darianne Seward tallied 13 points, four assists, and three steals, while
Miranda Crockett (12) and
Eriel McKee (10) rounded out the double-digit scoring.
Despite 15 points and 12 boards from Austin Peay center Tearra Banks, Morehead State dominated points in the paint, 50-30. The Eagles led by 25 with 9:03 to go in the fourth quarter, but 13-for-19 (.684) shooting from the free throw line in the final period alone ultimately narrowed the Governors' large deficit.
"I was very pleased for the game," Todd said. "But, give Austin Peay credit. They kept playing and didn't quit."
Morehead State looks to increase its winning streak to seven games when the Eagles visit UT Martin (4-10, 1-0 OVC) on Saturday at 5 p.m. ET. The matchup will be broadcast live on the
OVC Digital Network.
