MOREHEAD, Ky. -- A trio of wins on the men's side and several top-10 finishes for the women highlighted the Morehead State track and field teams' opening event of 2016, the 'Southern Invitational, this weekend at Birmingham Southern.
The men saw seniors Evans Childers and
Jorge Gil-Juarez claim wins on Friday night and freshman
Justin Moakler pick up a win Saturday in his first collegiate event.
Childers paced the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:25.53, more than six seconds faster than the second-place finisher and just 12 ticks shy of the school record. Gil-Juarez won the 1,500-meter race at 4:00.18. Senior
Jesse Moreno, coming off a redshirt season for track, took third in that event with a time of 4:03.67, and freshman
Shane Rigsby was third at 4:05.67.
Moakler shined in the 800-meter run on Saturday, edging out eight others in his heat separated by less than five seconds, and winning with a time of 1:53.64.
For the women, senior
Jasmyn Andrews took third in the 5,000-meter run, crossing the line in 19:02.32. Senior
Alex Morris came in eighth in the 800-meter event, turning in a time of 2:24.34. Junior Mackenzie Butler was fifth in the 1,500-meter race, coming across at 4:57.99.
Up next for both teams is the Butler Bulldog Opener on Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind.
