BURLINGTON, N.C. – Morehead State freshman
Joe Muschong posted a top-10 finish at the Elon Phoenix Invitational on Tuesday at the Alamance Country Club, while the Eagles ranked 13th as a team by way of a 298-284-298 score.
Muschong tied for 10th place among the 96 competing golfers with a final tally of 71-66-73 at 3 strokes under par.
"I am very proud of Joe and his top-10 finish," said MSU head coach
Matthew Martin. "His round of 66 propelled us to a good second round. To compete in a strong field like this, we needed two more rounds close to par."
Participating as an individual, redshirt junior
Zach Smith led the rest of the Eagles behind Muschong at a tie for 40th place. Smith shot 6-over at 73-69-77.
Sophomore
Cooper Collins and senior
Blake Cartwright were each part of an eight-way tie for 56th with 10-over finishes. Collins shot 77-73-73, while Cartwright logged 74-74-75.
Nick Wilkins and
Cameron Dawson rounded out Morehead State's performance by tying for 80th and 84th place, respectively.
"As a team, our putting numbers must improve," Marin said. "We cannot afford to waste strokes like we did at times this week."
Morehead State was the only Ohio Valley Conference institution represented at Tuesday's final of 15 teams. Following its lowest finish of the fall season, only one tournament remains before the Eagles take a three-and-a-half-month hiatus.
"I'm looking forward to competing one more time this fall," said Martin. "We will work hard to make (the MTSU Intercollegiate) our best event yet."
Morehead State visits Middle Tennessee, host of the MTSU Intercollegiate, at the Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on October 30.
