SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Morehead State men's golf led all Ohio Valley Conference teams competing in the 2017 Hummingbird Intercollegiate, finishing tied for third overall with a score of 295-285-289 on Tuesday evening at The Country Club of Sapphire Valley.

"I am pleased with our finish to the tournament," said head coach Matthew Martin. "We ended up beating some quality teams after climbing the leaderboard each round."

The Eagles ended the first round tied for seventh place among the field of 13 schools that included three other OVC affiliates, but advanced to fifth place by the end of the second round on Monday. Only eventual runner-up Elon (282) submitted a better final-round performance than Morehead State, while Gardner-Webb led the tournament from start to finish.

Sophomore Cooper Collins anchored the charge for the Eagles, tying for 13th place on the individual leaderboard with a 74-69-72 scoresheet. Redshirt junior Zach Smith joined Collins in the top 25 of the 87 competing golfers, finishing tied for 22nd at 71-73-75.

"Everyone contributed over the course of the three rounds," Martin said. "We have the potential to play even better."

Senior Blake Cartwright tied for 31st place at 75-76-70, and freshman Joe Muschong followed closely behind at a tie for 37th place with a score of 78-73-72.

Nick Wilkins, medalist of last week's NKU Fall Classic, rounded out the Morehead State top five by shooting 75-70-80, ending in a tie for 50th place. Competing as an individual, Tyler Hillyer turned in a solid final round and tied for 70th at 78-80-72.

The Eagles return to the Tar Heel State next Monday and Tuesday, competing in the Elon Phoenix Invitational at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington, N.C.
