MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – In the second first-place finish by a Morehead State men's golfer this season, sophomore
Cooper Collins was named co-medalist of the MTSU Intercollegiate on Monday evening at the Old Fort Golf Club. As a unit, Morehead State carded 295-300 for a 15-over third-place showing among the 10-team field.
"Cooper was fantastic," said head coach Mattew Martin. "He beat some really good players and was just steady throughout. As for the whole team, we showed flashes of what we can be. But, we still have yet to put an entire tournament together, which encourages me for the spring. We have to get more consistency throughout."
Collins tied with Middle Tennessee's Chip Thomas as one of three golfers who ended the day below par. The Lexington, Ky. native scored 70 in both rounds of the competition, notching 4-under with a final tally of 140.
Freshman
Joe Muschong tied for 14th place with a 74-75 scorecard, while redshirt junior
Zach Smith followed at 72-79 in a tie for 25th. Junior
Tyler Hillyer tied for 46th, recording 79-77 on the day.
Competing as an individual, fellow junior and reigning NKU Fall Classic medalist
Nick Wilkins logged 82-75 and ranked 53rd overall. Close behind in a tie for 54th, freshman
Zac Viminitz shot 76-82 as the Eagles' other individual competitor. Senior
Blake Cartwright rounded out the Morehead State scoring at 83-78, landing him in 65th place.
In the six tournaments of the Fall 2017 season, the Eagles finished in the top three of half of them. Martin, in his fourth season at the helm, sees an unprecedented reason for optimism with the first half of 2017-18 in the books.
"Even though we did not play to our potential, this was the best stretch of tournaments we've had since I've been here," Martin said. "It's the first time we've ever had two individual titles in a semester, as well."
Morehead State will tee off Spring 2018 on Feb. 12, taking part in the Pizza Hut Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational at the Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.
