MOREHEAD, Ky. - Sophomore guard
Miranda Crockett led the way as Morehead State women's basketball (19-7, 9-4 Ohio Valley Conference) cruised past Tennessee State, 87-74, on Wednesday night at Johnson Arena.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, extending the gap to 21 points at the half after a strong second quarter. They led by as many as 29 in the closing minute of the third.
"It feels great," said head coach
Greg Todd. "We knew it would be a battle. I thought our girls came out and played great for the first three quarters."
Crockett finished with a game-high 20 points, while shooting an impressive 9-of-13 (.692) from the floor. She also added six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
"(Crockett) is very smooth when she's able to hit the pull-up jump shot," Todd said. "She had it going tonight. She was hot."
Four other Eagles finished in double-figures, as senior guard
KayK Tate added 16 points, while shooting 3-of-3 from three-point range. Senior guard
Eriel McKee had 13 points, finishing just one shy of the 1,000-point plateau for her career. Senior forward
Shay Steele had 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard
Aaliyah Wells ended with 10 points.
Wednesday's triumph marked revenge for a 69-66 loss to the Lady Tigers last month in Nashville, Tenn. With a ninth conference victory, the Eagles stay put at second place in the OVC, four games behind Belmont.
Morehead State returns to action this weekend, taking on the league-leading Bruins for the second time this season. The Eagles will tip at Belmont on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET in Nashville.
