NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State women's basketball (19-8, 9-5 Ohio Valley Conference) fell at Belmont (23-5, 15-0 OVC) by a score of 96-76 on Saturday evening.
The Eagles saw a season-high 25 points from redshirt-sophomore
Darianne Seward, who connected on 7-of-10 (.700) tries from three-point range. The 5-foot-4 guard added two rebounds, an assist, and a steal, shooting 8-for-18 (.444) from the floor.
Morehead State shot 29-of-73 (.397) as a team, knocking down 10-of-20 (.500) attempts from downtown. The Eagles defense outscored the Bruins 15-13 off turnovers, thanks to six steals and six blocked shots by MSU.
In addition to Seward's sharpshooting performance, two more Morehead State players logged double-digit scoring outputs.
Aaliyah Wells poured in 15 points on 7-of-11 (.636) shooting, tallying five boards, three assists, and a steal in 26 minutes. Senior
Shay Steele recorded 14 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
With six points and two assists, junior forward
Eriel McKee became the 24th all-time member of the Morehead State 1,000-point club. Steele reached the career plateau earlier this season.
Belmont, who sits atop the OVC thanks to an unblemished conference slate, never trailed in Saturday's matchup. The Bruins become the first team to sweep the Eagles in 2016-17.
Morehead State stays on the road for a contest at Tennessee Tech on Monday, tipping off at 7 p.m. ET. The Eagles defeated Tennessee Tech 79-65 on Jan. 25 at Johnson Arena.
