BATAVIA, Ohio – Beating out 87 individuals from 14 different schools, Morehead State golfer
Nick Wilkins was crowned medalist of the NKU Fall Classic on Monday at Elks Run Golf Club. At 70-73-69, the junior was the only player in the field to conclude the tournament under par.
As a team, the Eagles brought home an eighth-place finish, posting 302-298-302 over the two-day event.
"I could not be prouder of Nick," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "He qualified extremely well to start the year, then struggled mightily at (the MSU Invitational). Now, two weeks later, he goes out and wins a tournament. He absolutely earned this victory with his preparation and by maintaining a positive attitude, even though he was not playing his best."
Wilkins entered the fall campaign as the Eagles' top player, only to record a bottom-20 finish in the season-opening MSU Invitational. Wilkins earned a shot at redemption by competing as an individual in Monday's event, setting a new career-low of 69 in the third round.
"This course was set up tough today," Martin said. "(Wilkins) hit 16 greens and holed some timely putts down the stretch."
Freshman
Joe Muschong tied for 16th at 78-71-72, while senior
Blake Cartwright tied for 20th at 76-74-73.
Cooper Collins tied for 35th,
Zac Viminitz tied for 65th, and
Cameron Dawson tied for 68th to round out the Eagles' top five.
Redshirt junior
Zach Smith joined Wilkins as an individual, ending in a tie for 29th place after entering the final round ranked in the top 10.
Morehead State is back in action on Oct. 2, traveling to Sapphire, N.C. for the Hummingbird Intercollegiate at The Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
