BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Morehead State women's basketball team outran the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs to the tune of an 84-69 victory on Sunday afternoon at Paul Porter Arena.
Junior guard
Aliyah Jeune scored a game-high 28 points and senior guard
Miranda Crockett poured in 24 of her own as the Eagles improved their record to 2-0 after opening the season with two road games.
The Runnin' Bulldogs, who had begun the season with a road win against Southeastern Conference member Florida on Tuesday, fell to 2-1 overall.
Morehead State led by as many as 37 points before allowing a late run by Gardner-Webb. The Eagles held the Runnin' Bulldogs to just 12-of-38 (.316) shooting through the first three quarters before the home squad chipped away in the fourth period.
Senior guard
Crystal Simmons-Cozar posted game-highs for both assists (8) and steals (5) while adding 12 points. Graduate forward Mckenzie Calvert saw her first prominent action of the season after getting into foul trouble in the season opener on Friday, pulling down nine rebounds and logging six points and dishing out five assists in 27 minutes of action.
Jeune shot an impressive 9-for-15 and splashed home 4-of-10 shots from beyond the arc in her second consecutive 28-point outing. The Westhampton, N.J., native has now hit on 20-of-30 shots from the field to open the season.
Crockett also had another stat-sheet stuffing night as she snatched six rebounds to go with her 24 point night on 11-of-15 shooting.
Morehead State collectively shot an impressive 31-for-59 (.525) from the field and knocked down 17-of-19 (.895) shots at the charity stripe.
The Eagles will return home this Friday for the opening game of the Vinewood Farm Classic against Valparaiso at 6:35 p.m. ET. The game will be the first of three games over the weekend in the tournament and the first of a five-game homestand for Morehead State.
