RICHMOND, Ky. – It came down to the final possession and a potential game-tying attempt from beyond the perimeter, but Morehead State women's basketball (18-9, 9-5 Ohio Valley Conference) fell at bitter rival Eastern Kentucky (8-15, 5-9 OVC) by a score of 59-56 on Saturday evening at McBrayer Arena.

The Eagles ended the day shooting 19-for-61 (.311) from the field, their lowest percentage of the conference season. Morehead State hit each of its three-point attempts in the opening quarter, however, including sophomore guard Breuna Jackson's jump shot just before the buzzer sounded. Morehead State ended the period with a 12-8 advantage.

A 6-of-16 (.375) performance in the second quarter was the Eagles' best of the contest, propelling them to a 28-23 lead at the halftime break. The tides changed in the third, though, when the Colonels roared to life and outscored Morehead State 18-12, notching a 41-40 lead with one quarter to play.

Eastern Kentucky shot a game-high 7-for-15 (.467) in the final stanza, building a 58-51 lead with 33 seconds remaining. Darianne Seward sank two free throws to bring the Eagles within five just four seconds later, then stole a pass from EKU's Abby Wright on the ensuing possession.

The ball worked its way to freshman sharpshooter Sisalynn Norman for a contested look at the top of the key, but her shot fell short into the ready hands of Seward. The 5-foot-4 guard raced her way to the corner for a desperation three, swishing the long-range jumper with 21 seconds to go.

Jackson was forced to foul once Eastern Kentucky got the ball, sending Wright to the line for two. The EKU junior missed the first and nailed the second, bringing the score to 59-56 in favor of the home team. Morehead State called timeout with 11 tics left on the board, regrouping before the contest's final sequence.

Jackson, who had already connected on two field goals from downtown, hoisted a potential game-tying three-pointer from the wing, but the ball rimmed out and landed in the hands of the opponent as the horn sounded.

Seward finished with a season-high 10 rebounds, but the Eagles were bested 50-36 on the glass. Redshirt senior Erin Blaine led all scorers with 18, followed by 16 points and six rebounds from Eriel McKee. Junior guard Miranda Crockett matched Seward's eight-point output, while Jackson rounded off the MSU scoring with six.

Morehead State returns to action next week for the last road trip of the 2017-18 regular season. The Eagles travel to Tennessee State (5-18, 3-11 OVC) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Morehead State defeated the Lady Tigers 97-81 on Feb. 1 at Johnson Arena.
