MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Following a 3-1 opening weekend, it's back on the road for the Morehead State softball program this weekend. The Eagles will play four games at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Invitational at Campbell University.
Due to expected rain, the schedule was altered slightly. MSU will now play Bucknell at 9 a.m. ET Friday, followed by a game against Northern Kentucky. On Saturday the Eagles 30th-ranked James Madison at 4:30 p.m. The tournament now wraps up with a 1 p.m. game against the host Camels on Sunday.
Morehead State opened its 2018 season with two victories against Central Michigan, rated 55th in the NCAA RPI last weekend, in Georgia. They also defeated Buffalo before a wild game with Appalachian State resulted in a 15-8 loss where 11 runs for ASU for unearned.
"We had a really good opening weekend with some wins against quality opponents," said head coach
David Williams. "This weekend will be the same. These are all quality teams we play. Right now, it is all about improving each week as a team and working on the things we need to to be stronger."
Four Eagles enter the weekend with .400 or better batting averages, led by junior infielder/pitcher
Allison Rager at .500 and senior
Taylor Wheeler also at .500. A pair of freshmen had great collegiate debuts last weekend as
Kalle Coleman (.417) and
Paige Scruggs (.400) also hit better than .400 and also had home runs each.
Morehead State showcased its power last weekend too with six home runs by six different players. In the circle, senior
Chelsea McManaway paces MSU with a 2-0 record and a 1.00 ERA with a team-high 18 strikeouts.
Bucknell and Northern Kentucky are both starting their 2018 seasons this weekend. James Madison, which is a perennial top-25 program and NCAA Tournament team is 3-2. Campbell is also 3-2.
Morehead State has never faced James Madison or Bucknell. The progam is 2-3 lifetime against Campbell, having split games in 2017. MSU holds a 27-13-1 advantage in a series with Northern Kentucky, also having split games last year.
