LONGWOOD, Fla. -
Cooper Collins led the way once again for four Eagles who placed among the top 25 on the leaderboard, as Morehead State recorded its second consecutive fifth-place finish of the spring season on Tuesday at the Legacy Intercollegiate.
"We're coming home with more positives out of this tournament," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "But, we are still more capable than what we've shown at times. We just have to keep progressing."
Collins put together a phenomenal opening day, tying for first place with a score of 71-67. The sophomore's second round proved to be the best result of the tournament, while Collins went on to finish the competition as the leader in par-3 scoring.
However, just as eight of the nine teams participating in the two-day event, the Lexington, Ky. native's third-round score was his outlier of the tournament. Collins logged a final score of 71-67-79, tying for third place.
Senior
Blake Cartwright joined Collins in the top 10, claiming sole possession of seventh place at 74-71-74.
Nick Wilkins, who led the tournament in number of pars (40), tied for 14th at 73-71-78.
Freshman
Zac Viminitz closed the tournament on a tear while competing as an individual, posted 80-75-69 in a tie for 23rd place.
Zach Smith and
Joe Muschong rounded out the Eagles' lineup with 48th and 50th rankings, respectively.
"I love our team, and I like the direction we're going," Martin said. "But, we still have some work to do. We can manage our games and the course much better at times."
Morehead State concluded the tournament at 295-288-306 after four of its six competing golfers recorded at least one round under par. The Eagles will resume action on March 9, teeing off at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C.
