PINEHURST, N.C. -
Blake Cartwright tied for third in his best individual finish of the season, while Morehead State men's golf placed eighth at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate on Sunday at Pinehurst No. 8.
"I am extremely proud of Blake," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "He was holing putts from everywhere on the toughest greens we play all year. He never gets too high or too low and he was able to conquer the challenges of the conditions and this great course."
Cartwright carded a score of 74-73-71, just three strokes shy of Ball State medalist Michael VanDeventer in the field of 84. The Eagles' only four-year letter winner surpassed a previous season-best fourth-place finish at the EKU Raising Cane's Intercollegiate on Sept. 17.
Joe Muschong, the lone Morehead State golfer competing as an individual, followed Cartwright at 77-77-73 in a tie for 27th place. The freshman from Lexington, Ky. has finished 27th or better in five tournaments on the season.
Junior
Nick Wilkins tied for 43rd place at 74-79-78, while sophomore
Cooper Collins turned in a 76-77-80 performance in a tie for 45th. Redshirt junior
Zach Smith tied for 49th, and freshman
Zac Viminitz rounded out the MSU lineup in sole possession of 65th place.
Morehead State totaled 302-301-309, ranking second among three competitors from the Ohio Valley Conference. The Eagles return to the green on Friday, March 23 at the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.
