LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Despite taking a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning and appearing to seal the win with a close call at first base, the Morehead State baseball team saw Kansas get a walk-off, two-run homer in the 12th inning to defeat the Eagles 8-6 at Hoglund Ballpark Thursday night.
The Eagles (15-12) led 3-1 before a two-run homer in the seventh by the hosts tied it. MSU clubbed three straight doubles in the top of the ninth inning to move ahead 6-3, but the Jayhawks (16-10) led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run. With two outs, catcher Jaxx Groshens bounced a ball to shortstop. The throw from
Reid Leonard to
Trevor Snyder appeared to beat a sliding Groshens into the bag, but he was called safe. A batter later, DH Brett Voshik singled home the tying runs before the would-be winning run was tagged out at home trying to score on an overthrow from the outfield.
"It was disappointing in that I thought we played really well tonight," said head coach
Mike McGuire. "Sometimes when you go on the road it doesn't always go in your favor on calls, but that aside, we got really great pitching in some big spots tonight, and I thought, with the exception of too many strikeouts, several guys had great nights at the plate too."
Junior right-hander
TJ Satterly made his first career start a solid one. He struck out a career-best eight Kansas batters in 5.1 innings and only gave up two hits. The tough-luck loss went to lefty
David Looney (0-3), whose only blemish besides three walks was the final two-run homer.
"TJ did not come out early because he was in trouble, he just had not pitched that long really any time before," McGuire said. "In the last three weeks or so, he has really probably been our most consistent arm."
Offensively, Snyder finished 3-for-5. Senior
Braxton Morris kept his hitting streak intact at 22 games with two hits, including a double, and Leonard added two hits to move his reached-base streak up to 19 games. Morris also upped his reached-base streak to 28 games.
The Eagles scored their first two runs on a wild pitch and passed ball in the third and then plated their final run also on a wild pitch.
The teams will play game two of the series at 7 p.m. ET on Friday.
