COLUMBIA, Mo. – Morehead State men's golf concluded its 2017-18 regular season in promising fashion, carding a 298-293-290 eighth-place finish among the 19-team field on Tuesday evening at the Missouri Tiger Invitational.
"Building positive momentum going into the (Ohio Valley Conference) Championship was our main goal this week, and we accomplished that fully," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "All five players are leaving this tournament trending in the right direction."
Morehead State experienced a third-round surge from a pair of its most prolific golfers, as well as a steady performance from junior
Nick Wilkins. The Frankfort, Ky. native finished three-over at 74-72-73 in a tie for 28th place out of 102 competitors.
After an opening round of 74 and a second round of 77, sophomore
Cooper Collins locked in for a score of 69 in the third, finishing in a tie for 31st place. Freshman
Joe Muschong tied for 37th at 75-71-76, and senior
Blake Cartwright recovered from a slow start to end at 76-80-72 in a tie for 58th.
Each of the Eagles' top four performers logged a round equal to par or below, while junior
Tyler Hillyer rounded out the MSU lineup with a 75-73-82 showing in a tie for 69th place. Host Missouri earned its second consecutive Missouri Tiger Invitational crown, while the OVC's SIUE followed Morehead State with a 10th-place ranking.
"As both a team and individually, there are spots in our game we can and will improve on," Martin said. "With our experience this week and our preparation going forward, I have the most confidence I've ever had in my team going into the postseason."
With its final tune-up in the books, Morehead State heads to Muscle Shoals, Ala. for the OVC Championship on April 23-25. The Eagles tied for sixth at the event last season.
