MOREHEAD, Ky. – For the second time in as many weeks, Morehead State Women's Basketball guard
Tomiyah Alford has been tabbed as the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week.
In the Eagles games against Valparaiso and Asbury (Ky.), the 5-foot-10 native of Barnesville, Ga., averaged 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game. From the field, the rookie hit on 15-of-22 field-goal attempts for a shooting clip of 68%.
"Tomiyah had another efficient week on the offensive end and was solid defensively," said MSU head coach
Greg Todd. "You can never question her energy and effort. She's a hard-working player who is always trying to improve her game and our staff is happy for her to recognized once again by the league."
At Valpo on Tuesday, Alford came off the bench to score 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting while also grabbing three rebounds and swiping three steals.
Alford made her first-career start on Thursday against Asbury and took advantage by logging her first-career double-double. The guard turned in career-best numbers of 21 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals for the Eagles in the win.
While Alford has now won back-to-back OVC Freshman of the Week awards, it marks the third consecutive for Morehead State. Six-foot guard
Ariel Kirkwood was recognized as the top rookie performer of the week on Dec. 10.
Alford is the first MSU hooper to receive back-to-back OVC freshman honors since
Miranda Crockett (2015-19) did so three consecutive times from Dec. 22, 2015 - Jan. 5, 2016.
Morehead State returns to the court on Dec. 30 in Waco, Texas, against No. 6 Baylor. The Eagles and Lady Bears, meeting for the second consecutive season, are slated to tip-off at 9:00 p.m. ET at the Ferrell Center.
