BOX SCORE (SOUTH CAROLINA)
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Returning to the court for the first time in two weeks, Morehead State (4-1) dropped a 5-0 decision with No. 11 South Carolina (11-6) on Tuesday. The match—a single match—marked just the fourth match against a ranked opponent in program history.
"I was proud of the way our team fought tonight," said head coach
Jaime Gordon. "South Carolina is a really strong team that plays low error ball. We had to earn every point out there today."
While Morehead State may have dropped all six flights on Tuesday, the Eagles did have opportunities to pick up a match or two. In the top flight, freshmen
Hannah Keating and
Allison Whitten nearly captured their first match, dropping 21-19. The pairing would eventually drop the flight with a 21-9 setback.
In the second flight, sophomore
Olivia Lohmeier and freshman Margaret Mussleman found themselves in a pair of close matches, dropping their flights by scores of 21-16 and 21-17. At the threes, graduate student
Georgia Childers and freshman
Olivia Montelisciani fought hard before falling 21-6 and 21-16.
"One through three played well and we had a couple of shots to take a set this evening," added Gordon. "We had some nerves at first at the four through six, but settled down and made some improvements.
Junior
Liz Allen and freshman
Hannah Mabrey got the draw from the fourth post, dropping 21-4 and 21-8 while junior
Chandler Clark and sophomore
Lauren Rokey competed at the fives, falling 21-3 and 21-9. From the extra pairing, redshirt freshman
Taylor Hodges and junior
Karlee Reynolds fell 21-8, 21-14.
"Tonight was an opportunity to grow and I think our team took advantage of it," concluded Gordon.
The Eagles continue their Carolina trip this weekend, competing at the UNCW Dig & Dive Invitational, traveling north to Wilmington, N.C. Morehead State will face Tusculum (Tenn.) and Carson-Newman (Tenn.) for the second time this season while also facing host UNC Wilmington and the College of Charleston during the two-day event.
