GAME NOTES
THE SERIES WITH MARSHALL, PART TWO
Having met once prior during the 2019 season, Morehead State and Marshall will embark on their 142
nd all-time meeting on Wednesday. The Eagles took the previous meeting 5-4 over the Thundering Herd to improve to 77-61-3 in the series. Wednesday's meeting also marks the fifth time in the past ten seasons the two clubs have met multiple times in a series while also marking the eighth-straight season the two teams have clashed in the rivalry.
ANOTHER GARNERS WEEKLY HONORS
Following his two-hit, complete-game shutout last Friday at Jacksonville State, redshirt junior southpaw
Dalton Stambaugh has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week. The selection marks the third time Stambaugh has earned the honor in his career, doing so on two occasions last season. He also stands as the fifth different Eagle to have garnered weekly honors from the league, joining
Jason Goe,
Jake Hammon,
Connor Pauly, and
Chase Sortor.
PITCHING ANOTHER SHUTOUT
For the second time in his career, Stambaugh tossed a complete game shutout, blanking Jacksonville State 5-0. He allowed just three baserunners all evening, allowing two hits—both in the first inning—and one walk. At one point, Stambaugh sat down 17 batters in a row before letting up a walk, just to erase the baserunner with a double play to preserve a streak of going three-up-three-down across the final eight frames of the game. The shutout joins his other complete game effort in which he allowed just four hits at Alabama A&M last season as the Eagles also won that game by a score of 5-0.
MAKE IT FOUR SEASONS IN A ROW
With Stambaugh's shutout at Jacksonville State, Morehead State pitching has recorded at least one shutout in each of the last four seasons, including having pitched four shutouts in each of the last two seasons. Since 2013, under head coach
Mike McGuire, the Eagles have recorded 14 shutouts with four of those being complete game efforts. Stambaugh and former lefty
Aaron Leasher have each recorded two complete-game shutouts with Leasher registering two during the 2016 season.
DOUBLE VISION
With an eighth-inning double in game three of Morehead State's series at Jacksonville State, senior shortstop
Reid Leonard tied the Morehead State program record with his 59
th career double. The two-bagger marked Leonard's 12
th of the season, tying him with former shortstop Drew Lee who recorded 57 doubles from 2007-10. With one more double, Leonard would claim the career-best in a sixth category as he also stands as the program's leader in at-bats, plate appearances, runs scored, hits, and singles.
MAKE IT THREE WITH 200 OR MORE
Appearing in all three games last weekend, another pair of Eagles surpassed 200 career games played. Seniors
Hunter Fain and
Trevor Snyder have both appeared in 202 games in their career, becoming the 11
th and 12
th players in program history to reach 200 or more games played as an Eagle. The duo joins Leonard (220) to give this season's club, three players with 200 or more career games played.
CONTINUING THE REMARKABLE RUN
By reaching base in all three games during last weekend's series at Jacksonville State, Leonard has now reached in 200 of the 220 games in which he has played. For perspective, there are only 12 players in program history who have played 200 or more games. Leonard has reached in 91 percent of the games played in his career and over the past two seasons has failed to reach just five times. In regards to a career-best reached base streak, Leonard authored the longest such streak in Morehead State history, reaching in 50 consecutive games during the 2018 season.
HIT MACHINES
Jockeying with one another for the conference's hits lead, senior outfielders
Jake Hammon and
Connor Pauly find themselves tied atop the league's hit leaderboard with 68 hits apiece. The total ranks both players 14
th in the NCAA in the category, making Morehead State one of five teams in the country to slot two players in the top-25 in the category, joining A&M-Corpus Christi, George Washington, New Mexico State, and Wake Forest.
THIS STAFF IS ON FIRE
Through 45 games this season, Morehead State's pitching staff ranks as one of the best in the OVC. Eagle pitching leads the league in earned run average (4.35), hits allowed per nine innings (8.70), strikeout-to-walk-ratio (2.42), WHIP (1.38), and walks allowed per nine innings (3.75). The pitching staff also ranks second in the OVC in shutouts (4) and total strikeouts while ranking fourth in the league in strikeouts per nine innings (9.1).
