GAME NOTES
THE SERIES WITH ALABAMA A&M
With a pair of games this week, Morehead State and Alabama A&M will have met 12 times in the two program's histories. The Eagles own a 9-1 advantage in the prior 10 games, all played since 2013, the first season for Morehead State under head coach
Mike McGuire. The two teams have met each season since 2013, sans the 2016 season, with the previous 10 meetings split with six at Alabama A&M and four at Allen Field. Last season, the Eagles swept a three-game series at Alabama A&M, surrendering just one run while picking up a pair of shutouts.
BACK-TO-BACK POW
Following redshirt junior right-hander
Jason Goe's Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week performance last week, Morehead State has made it two awards in as many weeks as senior outfielder
Jake Hammon took home Player of the Week honors this week. The Smyrna, Tenn. native batted .529 (9-for-17), slugging .941, and reaching base at a .526 clip. Hammon roped a double and club a pair of home runs, driving home eight while scoring five and adding in a stolen base as he became the third different Eagle to claim a Player of the Week nod (
Chase Sortor and
Connor Pauly) in addition to Goe's Pitcher of the Week honor.
WELCOMING THE KIDS
Wednesday's game against Alabama A&M will mark the second education day game in Morehead State baseball history as first pitch is slated for 11 a.m. ET. The first iteration of the promotion was executed during the 2017 season—also against the Bulldogs—and coincided with the establishment of a new attendance record of 1,053 people. An education day game had been planned for the 2018 season before Mother Nature forced its cancellation and the relocation of the midweek series.
DOUBLE VISION
With three doubles as part of a 4-for-4 day last Friday against SIUE, junior catcher
Jon Burghardt added his name to the Morehead State record books, becoming the ninth player in program history to record three doubles in a game. Burghardt's three doubles make him the fourth player in the last five seasons to accomplish the feat.
HIT MAKERS
Morehead State's senior outfield duo of
Connor Pauly (fifth nationally) and
Jake Hammon (ninth) continue to rake in the hits at the plate, placing 1-2 on the OVC's hits leaderboard with 53 and 51 hits, respectively. On the year the pair stands as one of three sets of teammates to rank in the top-10 in the NCAA in the category, joining Joey Ortiz and Nick Gonzales of New Mexico State and Enrique Sanchez Jr. and Itchy Burts of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Additionally, both players carry hitting streaks with Pauly collecting a hit in each of the last seven games while Hammon has gotten a hit in each of the last five.
HOME SWEET HOME
With a three-game sweep over the weekend against SIUE, Morehead State has now captured its last nine home contests, improving to 15-1 on the season at home. Under head coach
Mike McGuire, the Eagles own a 104-41 record at Allen Field, winning 10 or more games at home in each of the last six seasons. In fact, Morehead State has not dropped double-digit decisions at home since the 2011 season.
THE MORE RUNS, THE MORE FUN
On the season, Morehead State has hung double-figure runs on the board in 10 of the team's 32 games. The Eagles own a 9-1 record in such games and have won all nine of the double-digit run games that have occurred at home. With nine games of 10 or more runs at home this season, the Eagles average a double-figure scoring mark, scoring 10.3 runs per game at home as opposed to a 4.8 run per game output on the road.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
With last Saturday's twin-billing with SIUE, Morehead State has now played six doubleheaders on the season. The total marks the most during a single season for the program since 2016—also six. On the year, the Eagles are 9-3 when facing a doubleheader, having completed three sweeps and having salvaged three splits on the year.
ANOTHER MILESTONE
With a victory in the front-half of last Saturday's doubleheader, Morehead State head coach
Mike McGuire collected his 350
th career coaching victory. He now has 351 career coaching victories (209 at Morehead State, 90 at Lander [S.C.], and 52 at Louisburg [S.C.] CC), having collected his 200
th victory at Morehead State earlier this season. With his next victory, McGuire will collect his 300
th career NCAA coaching victory, completing the coaching victories trifecta.
BACK ON THE BOARD
After going eight games without a home run enter last week's midweek contest at Ohio, Morehead State exploded over the last week, slamming seven home runs across four games. The Eagles collected a home run in all four games with a pair of multi-homer games. On the season, Morehead State has hit multiple home runs in 10 games, hitting a team game-high three on two occasions.
