BOX SCORE

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -
Morehead State baseball saw Tennessee Tech rally for four runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Eagles 8-7 in the finale of an OVC series Saturday at Bush Stadium.

MSU had rallied itself with four runs in the eighth inning to take a 7-4 lead but could not hold off the power-hitting Golden Eagles in the final frame as it fell to 33-19 overall and 16-11 in the league. Tech (22-28/9-18) only generated three of its run of the earned variety as there were six combined errors in the contest and four by MSU.

Junior designated hitter Jon Burghardt crushed a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie, his fifth home run in the last two weeks. Sophomore third baseman Stephen Hill's solo homer in the top of the eighth tied the game.

But, Tech got a two-run homer by John Dyer and a solo shot by Jason Hinchman to knot the game at seven. A three-base fielding error put the winning run on third, and a single up the middle won it.

The Eagles pushed across two runs in the second inning as senior center-fielder Connor Pauly scored on a wild pitch. Senior first baseman Trevor Snyder lifted a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Layne, who had hit a ball off the wall - and off the glove of the right fielder.

A pair of sac flies by the home team gave them the lead back (3-2) in the third inning.

Morehead State tied it again as junior second baseman Dom Peroni moved all the way to third on a wild pitch and scored when Hill's grounder was misplayed in the middle infield.

But, Tech once again used errors to score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth as Gavin Johns scored after reaching on a throwing error.

Freshman Landon Weins (4-3) was pegged with the loss after allowing all four runs in the deciding inning.

The Eagles have one more non-conference matchup on Tuesday when Dayton visits for a 5 p.m. ET first pitch. Southeast Missouri then visits next weekend for the regular season's final trio of games.
