MOREHEAD, Ky. – Nearing the official start of the 2019-20 season, Morehead State men's golf has added a former Ohio Valley Conference Tournament individual champion to its coaching staff. Head coach
Matthew Martin welcomes back former Eagle and 2018 OVC Tournament individual champion
Nick Wilkins as an assistant coach.
"I could not be more excited for Nick to remain a part of our program as a coach," said Martin. "Along with his fellow graduates from last year,
Tyler Hillyer and
Zach Smith, the group provided strong leadership as captains. I have complete confidence he will help our current players reach their full potential on and off the golf course."
A native of Frankfort, Ky., Wilkins was Morehead State's first men's golf NCAA Regional participant, competing at the 2018 NCAA Columbus (Ohio) Regional. Navigating the par-71, 7,364 yard OSU Scarlet Course, he fashioned scores of 79-84-79-242, finishing tied for 69th. Wilkins completed the 54-hole regional crafting 24 pars and three birdies.
Over the course of his Morehead State career, Wilkins competed in 122 total rounds across 42 total events. He finished his four-year tenure as an Eagle fashioning a 75.3 career stroke average while notching career-low rounds of 69 on three occasions. Wilkins recorded four career top-10 finishes at Morehead State, collecting two top-10 placements in each his junior and senior seasons.
His best finishes came as a junior during the 2017-18 season as he twice claimed medalist honors. His first victory came at the NKU Fall Classic as he concluded play as the only player under par, coming in at one-under. His next victory was perhaps the biggest as he claimed medalist honors at the 2018 OVC Championships. Wilkins finished regulation tied with Belmont's Jack Uselton before besting Uselton in a three-hole playoff by two strokes.
"I'm very excited to join the coaching staff," said Wilkins. "This program has given so much to me and I look forward to my new roles as we continue to compete for championships."
