ROSTER
MOREHEAD, Ky. -- With a new coaching staff, a plethora of returning talent and several promising newcomers, Morehead State Baseball is ready to tackle its fall schedule.
Last season, for the first time in recent history, the NCAA permitted Division I teams to play outside competition in a limited amount of games in the fall. The Eagles will host Georgetown (Ky.) at 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
On Sept. 29, MSU will face Kentucky in Lexington. A team from Canada, the Academy Baseball Canada, will visit Allen Field on Oct. 14, and the annual intra squad Fall Word Series will take place Oct. 24-26.
New head coach
Mik Aoki and his staff have a solid nucleus returning, led on offense by returning starters
Dom Peroni (infield),
Ryan Layne (infield/outfield)Â and
Stephen Hill (infield). Other returnees include outfielders
Zach Boyd and Arthur Sell and DH
Jon Burghardt.
Catcher
Brody Shoupe is also in the mix. Infielder
Bryce Hensor missed a majority of 2019 with an injury but is set to return as well. Redshirts in 2019 who are on this year's roster include outfielders
Bryce Ray and
Tim Petrucelli and infielders
Logan Goodnight,
Noah Matousek and Nick Gooden.Â
On the mound, the returners include weekend starters
Jason Goe,
Will Lozinak and
Alex Garbrick, along with relievers
Jake Ziegelmeyer,
John Bakke,
Zack Smith and
Cory Conway. Pitcher
John Sherman is back after sitting out 2019 recovering from surgery. Garbrick was drafted by the New York Yankees but elected to return for his third active season.
The 2019-20 roster features 11 newcomers.
Last year, Morehead State advanced all the way to the OVC Tournament Championship game before falling. The Eagles won 40 games for the first time in program history.
