Elston Goes for 23 Points as Women's Hoops Falls at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. -- Junior guard Jazzmyn Elston topped Morehead State's Women's Basketball team with 23 points and also grabbed seven rebounds, but it wasn't quite enough to overcome the host Murray State Racers as the Eagles fell 83-75 in Ohio Valley Conference at the CFSB Center Saturday afternoon.

Morehead State built a 42-40 halftime lead and led 60-59 after three quarters, but the home team hit 54 percent (7-of-13) in the final quarter and also seven of 10 free throws as they outscored the Eagles 24-15.

Freshman Ariel Kirkwood continued her quest to be the best first-year player in the league with her second straight double-double and sixth of the season. She had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks and now has 71 rejections on the year.

Despite going 1-for-14 from the floor, senior guard Breuna Jackson was the third Eagle in double figures with 10 points. The OVC's top free throw shooter was perfect at the stripe (8-for-8). She also had five assists, one short of her season high. Senior LaLa Humphries also scored 10 points and took down six rebounds.

Morehead State combined to hit 14-of-31 in quarters one and three but was limited to just 9-of-28 in the other two frames.

Five Racers dotted double figures, led by Macey Turley, who tied Elston for game-high honors with 23 markers.

Elston, the transfer from State Fair (Mo.) College, hit five three-pointers and also had a team-high two steals. MSU slipped to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the OVC with its final home stand coming up. The Eagles host Belmont Thursday at 5 p.m. ET.
