BOX SCORE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Freshman forward
Johni Broome produced his 14th career double-double Friday night for the Morehead State men's basketball team, and junior guard
Skyelar Potter had his fifth double-double, but unfortunately turnovers and blistering first-half shooting by host UAB spelled an 85-71 defeat for the Eagles.
Broome finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Eagles slipped to 0-2 on the young season. Broome notched his 10th career 20+ point game as well. UAB shot 63 percent in the first half and nearly equaled MSU's 23 total first period points just on points off Eagle turnovers with 22. That proved to be a little too much for MSU to ultimately overcome.
Morehead State did see two others reach double-figures in the point column as Potter chipped in 15 points and corralled 10 rebounds. He also handed out a team and career-high five assists. Broome's and Potter's 10+ rebound effort in the same game was the first time since they both did so in the OVC Championship game versus Belmont in March.
Graduate transfer Tray Holloway recorded his first double-digit effort as an Eagle with 13 points, including a trio of three pointers made. Lipscomb transfer
Jake Wolfe nearly missed double-digits as well with nine points after being held scoreless at Auburn.
Despite losing the turnover column 22-9, MSU won the rebound battle by a hefty margin, 38-21. The Eagles have now out-rebounded 26 opponents in the last two seasons.
MSU trailed just 6-5 early on following a jumper by Holloway, but a 13-1 run that spanned until the 12:41 mark of the opening half distanced the hosts. UAB led by as much as 25 (46-21) before settling for a 46-23 halftime cushion.
In the second period, another three-pointer by Hollowell at 10:21 trimmed the Eagles' margin to 64-49, and later MSU got to within 84-70 with 1:58 to go but could not cut the Blazer lead under double-digits.
MSU shot 50 percent (13-of-26) in the second half and 48 percent for the game but cold not overcome 54 percent overall shooting by UAB and 10 three-pointers on 25 attempts.
Morehead State will make its home debut in Johnson Arena Monday night versus Kentucky Christian at 7 p.m. ET.
