MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State Baseball picked up a pair of victories in its Saturday doubleheader at Norfolk State. The Eagles are now 5-0 all-time against Norfolk State after sweeping a three-game series against the Spartans a season ago.
The first of two seven-inning games required extra innings but MSU was able to claim a 5-3 victory after eight. The second half of the doubleheader saw all six combined runs come in the first three innings as the Eagles defeated the host Spartans 5-1 to finish the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME 1
- After spotting the Spartans a 1-0 lead,
Jacob Ferry scored on a bases-loaded walk in the fifth.
- The Eagles scored twice in the sixth, once on
Ryan Layne's trotting home on a wild pitch and once on Ferry's RBI ground out.
- NSU tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but Hill broke the tie in the eighth with a two-run single to left center-field.
NOTABLE – GAME 1
- Redshirt senior Stephen Hill's showing at the plate proved to be the difference-maker for Morehead State as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk in the first game of the day.
- Pitchers Jason Goe and Cory Conway combined to throw 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of action with only three runs allowed (all unearned) on three hits.
- Redshirt sophomore Bryce Hensor led the Eagles with three hits in his four at-bats while representing one of the five MSU runs.
- The 5-3 victory pushes Morehead State to 2-0 in extra-inning games this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- The Spartans earned their sole run of the game in the first inning with a two-out single that brought home a runner from second.
- MSU put up four runs in the top of the second highlighted by an RBI double from Cole Becker to kick off the scoring for the Eagles. Morehead State also scored on a balk, groundout, and wild pitch in the inning.
- The final run of the second half of the doubleheader was earned by Riley Preece's bases-loaded walk in the top of the third to account for the final 5-1 tally.
NOTABLE – GAME 2
- After throwing 2.0 scoreless innings in game two, redshirt junior reliever John Bakke now holds a share of the NCAA lead for most pitching appearances on the season.
- Arthur Sells tied his season-high of two hits while crossing the plate two times in the ballgame.
- Leadoff man Bryce Hensor continued his successful day at the plate with a pair of base knocks of his own along with two walks and one run.
- Sophomore Luke Helton had an impressive start on the mound with only one run allowed on three hits and three strikeouts in 5.0 innings.
