NOTABLE
With a 5-2 victory over No. 1 Louisville (ranking courtesy of Perfect Game), Morehead State defeated a top-ranked team for the first time in program history. The victory also marked the first victory against a top-10 opponent for the Eagles in 11 games.

The Eagles' win over a top-ranked team was the second time in the last three seasons an Ohio Valley Conference team defeated a No. 1 program as Austin Peay beat top-billed Vanderbilt in 2019. With a Jacksonville State victory over top-ranked Georgia in 2009, the OVC has downed three top-ranked teams since 2009.

Tuesday's victory over top-ranked Louisville marked Morehead State's first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 18 Tennessee Tech in the 2018 OVC Tournament Championship while marking the first victory over a ranked non-conference opponent since defeating No. 27 Mississippi State on Feb. 21, 2017.

Since 2006, Morehead State has recorded 11 wins versus ranked opponents, going 11-31 in 42 games. Prior to Tuesday's game, the highest-ranked opponent the Eagles had defeated was No. 12 Kentucky on April 8, 2014.

Dating back to 1926, Morehead State's series with Marshall stands as the second-longest series in program history. This weekend's split-venue series marks the first time the two clubs have played three or more games against one another in a season since 2004 with the three games marking the most consecutive games the teams have played against one another.

The Eagles lead the series 83-63-4 with four results being unknown. Despite not meeting in a shortened 2020 season, Morehead State has taken each of the last three in the series.

Eight Eagle pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts Tuesday versus No. 1 Louisville, the second-straight and third overall game this season with 10 or more punchouts for Eagle pitching. Morehead State has recorded six or more strikeouts in each game this season and the last eight overall with seven of those eight games including eight or more strikeouts.

As a staff, Morehead State ranks second in the OVC and 32nd in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings, averaging 11.2 per nine innings. Over the past two seasons, the Eagles have recorded 212 strikeouts in 189 innings to average 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings.

Sophomore right-hander Luke Helton ranks sixth in the OVC in strikeouts per nine innings, averaging 12.38 punchouts per nine. He's struck out 11 batters over eight innings of work this season, including a career-high nine strikeouts in his last start at Ohio.

A pair of Eagle relievers just miss cracking the league's leaderboard in strikeouts per nine innings, falling less than an inning shy of reaching the minimum 1.0 inning pitched per team game. Freshman righty Grant Herron leads Morehead State at 16.50 K/9, striking out 11 in 6.0 innings while redshirt senior lefty Cory Conway holds a 15.63 K/9, striking out 11 in 6.1 innings.

Pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief while striking out a career-high five batters, Herron recorded his first career victory against No.1 Louisville.

With an appearance Tuesday at No. 1 Louisville, Conway collected his 58th career relief appearance, breaking a tie with Morgan Cirbo (2012-13) for the fourth-most career relief appearances in program history. With a single appearance, Conway would tie Tyler Keele (2013-16) for third on the all-time list.

Earning six free passes Tuesday, Morehead State ranks third in the OVC in base on balls, drawing 37 through seven games. Redshirt senior third baseman Stephen Hill leads the Eagles with six walks with fifth-year centerfielder Ryan Layne adding five free passes.

A pair of former Eagles made their 2021 Spring Training debuts this week after earning Non-Roster invitations earlier in the spring. Taylor Davis (2009-11) made his spring debut Sunday for the Baltimore against Pittsburgh and has appeared in two games this spring. Aaron Leasher made his debut Tuesday for San Diego against Arizona, tossing two scoreless innings in relief, picking up one strikeout.
