Baseball Victimized by Late Rally in Setback to Eastern Illinois

BOX SCORE

MOREHEAD, Ky. --
Friday was Morehead State's time to shine in the late innings, but the visiting Eastern Illinois baseball team turned the tables Saturday as a three-run homer in the ninth ultimately sunk the Eagles 8-6 at Allen Field.

The Eagles, who still won the series, slipped to 17-13 overall and 8-4 in the OVC. EIU is now 18-16 and 8-10 in the conference.

In a back and forth battle, MSU scored twice in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead but the Panthers launched a rally in the top of the ninth which ended with a three-run homer to deep left center-field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Senior catcher Jack Gardner sparked an early lead for the Eagles with his team-best seventh home run of the season in the first inning.
- Senior third baseman Stephen Hill made it 3-0 in the second frame with a two-run single through the left side of the infield.
- EIU tied the game in the fifth 3-3 on an RBI single and RBI ground out. Both runs were unearned after an error.
- Morehead State immediately grabbed the lead again, 4-3, in the bottom of the fifth when Hill laced an RBI double to left field.
- Two more unearned runs off MSU errors gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead in the sixth.
- The home team broke back through with a 6-5 lead in the eighth. Senior right fielder Ryan Layne singled home pinch runner Nick Gooden and later scored on a bunt attempt that ended up being a passed ball.
- The Panthers got two runners on off reliever John Bakke in the ninth before Dalton Doyle lifted a long home run over the left field wall. Left-fielder Jacob Ferry gave a stab at it but it bounded off the top of the fence and over.

NOTABLE

- Freshman first baseman Jackson Feltner nailed an eighth inning double to extend his hitting streak to 11 games and reached-base streak to a team-high 20 games.
- Freshman Center-fielder Ryler Preece, Hill and freshman shortstop Colton Becker totaled two hits each as the Eagles had 11 for the game, the seventh straight double-digit hit game.
- Bakke made his OVC-leading 19th appearance but was tagged with his first loss of the season.
- Senior pitcher Donovan Baldocchi made his first appearance of the season.
