Baseball Eagles Upended at Eastern Kentucky in Non-Conference Matchup

BOX SCORE

RICHMOND, Ky. --
Morehead State baseball fell on the road to Eastern Kentucky 13-4 Tuesday in a game not counting toward the Ohio Valley Conference standings.

The Eagles (18-14) took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, but the Colonels (13-22) countered with an offensive outburst in scoring multiple runs in the next four frames. MSU had defeated EKU twice in the three-game series earlier this season in Morehead.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- An RBI single and RBI double staked the home team to a 2-0 lead after three innings.
- The Eagles tied the game 2-2 in the fourth. Freshman first baseman Jackson Feltner extended his reached-base streak to 22 games with a single. He later scored as sophomore DH Alex Jacobs singled him home.
- Pinch hitter Peyton Dillingham executed a squeeze bunt that scored senior right-fielder Ryan Layne, who had walked.
- MSU took a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth when senior third baseman Stephen Hill ripped an RBI double to score freshman center-fielder Ryley Preece who singled to lead off. Feltner drove home Hill with a sacrifice fly.
- EKU broke open the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth. All three in the sixth were of the unearned variety after a fielding error opened the inning and a passed ball allowed a runner to third base before scoring. EKU also hit a solo home run in the sixth and had a two-run double in the seventh inning.

NOTABLE

- Feltner's hitting streak also reached 13 games with his single. Jersey number 30 now also has 30 RBI this season.
- Senior pitcher Jake Ziegelmeyer, who had missed much of the season, made his first start since May 17, 2018 today and tossed the first inning wth 15 pitches.
- Jacobs tallied his fourth multi-hit game of the season.
- Preece moved his hitting streak to eight games, while Layne and senior second baseman Bryce Hensor each upped theirs to seven games in a row with a hit. Hensor's reached-base streak now sits at 12 games as well.
- Hill's double marked the seventh consecutive game MSU hit at least one two-bagger.
- The Eagles used seven pitchers. Junior righty Jarrett Miller surrendered three earned runs and was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1.
