MOREHEAD, Ky. -- After capturing the league's inaugural regular season title with a 10-1 mark, the Morehead State Beach Volleyball team heads to Martin, Tenn., this week to attempt to bring home another trophy - this one the league's first-ever tournament title.
By virtue of winning the regular-season, the Eagles get a bye in the first round. Their second-round opponent will ether be No. 4 Austin Peay or No. 5 Jacksonville State with that first match set for 6 p.m. ET Thursday. The double elimination event runs through Saturday.
Morehead State's No. 1 and No. 5 pairs (
Hannah Keating/
Allison Whitten and
Bridget Bessler/
Taylor Hodges) both finished the regular season with 10-1 records. The Eagles' twos (
Olivia Lohmeier/
Trinity Miller) went 8-3 overall and 7-2 at No. 2, while the threes (
Margaret Musselman/
Anya Reinhard) finished at 8-3. That pair represents the Eagles' lone pair with beach-only student-athletes.
Morehead State was 1-1 against Austin Peay, defeating the Govs 3-2 on April in Alabama before falling 3-2 last weekend at EKU. All three setbacks in the overall loss were close three-set matches. If the Eagles face Jacksonville State first, they'll have the experience of going 2-0, winning 3-2 on April 18 and 4-1 on April 25.
All five beach-playing OVC teams, plus affiliate member Chattanooga, will take part in this week's tournament.
