MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Morehead State men's golf student-athletes
Joe Muschong and
Ryan Gillum, as well as the rest of the team from 2020-21, have been honored by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for academic excellence.
Muschong and Gillum have been named All-American Scholars as presented by the GCAA and Srixon/Cleveland Golf. The program was named an All-Academic Team.
To be eligible for Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically. In addition, they must participate in 40 percent of the team's competitive rounds, have a stroke-average under 76.0, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
To be honored as an all-academic team, the team GPA for the year must be 3.0 or better.
A two-time All-OVC honoree, Muschong was also named an OVC Scholar-Athlete last year - the most prestigious individual award in the league. The Lexington, Ky., natvie and Lafayette High School alum led the team with a 72.0 stroke average in 2020-21. He also fired seven sub-70 rounds on the season, including a season-low 66 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate. Muschong notched four top-five finishes on the season, including finishing tied for third at the OVC Tournament Championships at seven-under par.
Gillum, from Grayson, Ky. and an Elliott County High School former star, finished the year with a stroke average of 74.8 while firing three sub-70 rounds, including a season-low 69 at the Any Given Tuesday Intercollegiate, Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and Missouri Tiger Invitational. He notched three top-25 finishes.
