MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Led by a pair of top-five finishes, the Morehead State men's golf team shined in its season opening event at the Eastern Kentucky Intercollegiate this weekend.
The Eagles improved with each round. MSU fired a 284-283-277 -- 844. They topped host, and former OVC rival Eastern Kentucky, by six strokes on the Colonels' home course.
"I am pleased with our start to the season. Our veterans carried us today," said head coach
Matthew Martin. "Beating a team on their home course is not easy and our low rounds today allowed us to do that. I can't wait to get to Guyan and compete again."
Senior
Zac Viminitz finished third among the field of 92 golfers with a 68-71-65 -- 204. Senior
Joe Muschong was right behind him in fifth with a 72-69-66 -- 207.
The Eagles also saw senior
Ryan Gillum finish with a 76-70-71 -- 217. Freshman
Nolan Piazza, in his first collegiate event, fired a 72-74-75 -- 221. Sophomore
Blake Evans rounded out the Eagle lineup at 72-73-77 -- 222.
Transfer
Cameron Travis competed as an individual and carded a 71-75-72.
Morehead State returns to action on Sept. 13-14 at the Guyan Country Club at the Joe Feaganes Invitational, hosted by Marshall.
