RICHMOND, KY --Veronica Charles collected a career-high 20 points, but the Morehead State women's basketball team fell to the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 64-55 on the road Sunday.
Charles added five rebounds, three assists, and four steals to her 20 point game to lead the Eagles. Crystal Corley helped out with five points, 10 rebounds and three blocks and Sandra Lin chipped in with eight points, five assists and two steals.
The Eagles outrebounded their opponent for the second straight game, holding a 40-35 advantage on the boards. The Eagles also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 15 rebounds into 13 second chance points.
The Eagles continue their non-conference slate next Sunday at East Tennessee State, with tip-off slated for 2:00 p.m.Â
How It Happened
Morehead State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-5 at the end of the first quarter.
The Eagles began to find their footing from the field in the second quarter, but still went into halftime trailing 33-20.Â
Eastern Kentucky continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 44-27 advantage before Morehead State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Sophie Baydanov, to trim its deficit to 44-35 with 46 seconds to go in the third. Eastern Kentucky countered and stretched its lead to 48-37 heading into the fourth. Morehead State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Morehead State narrowed its deficit in the fourth quarter, coming within five points of the Colonels but could not get over the hump, losing 64-55. Morehead State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
