Charles Notches Double-Double; Eagles Defeat Spalding (Ky.) in Home Opener

MOREHEAD, KY --
The Morehead State women's basketball team got a 45-point performance from the bench on the way to a 73-42 win over the Spalding Golden Eagles at home Tuesday.

The Eagles had three players score in double figures, led by Sophie Benharouga, who had 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks and Veronica Charles who added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Aina Subirats chipped in as well with 11 points from the bench.

Morehead State utilized fantastic ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 18 assists on 27 made field goals. Sandra Lin's notched a career-high eight assists, the most for the Eagles. 

The Morehead State defense was a problem in Tuesday's game, forcing 27 Spalding turnovers while committing 19. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the offensive end of the floor. Charles' eight steals led the way individually for the Eagles.

The Eagles return to Johnson Arena Saturday for a 2:00 PM matinee against Presbyterian, which can be found on ESPN+ or listened to on the Eagle Sports Radio Network. 

How It Happened

After falling behind 7-3, Morehead State went on an 11-0 run with 6:06 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Melissa Secchiaroli, to take a 14-7 lead. The Eagles then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 21-11 advantage. Morehead State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.

The Eagles maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 34-32 edge. Morehead State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 13 points.

Morehead State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 24-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lin, to expand its lead further to 58-32 with 1:36 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Eagles still entered the fourth quarter with a 58-34 edge. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 24 points in the paint.

Morehead State kept its lead intact before going on a 10-0 run to grow the lead to 70-38 with 52 seconds to go in the contest. The Golden Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Eagles still cruised the rest of the way for the 73-42 win. Morehead State took advantage of eight Spalding turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
